The USB Redirector server is the term used for the computer that will share the device over RDP. The machine must be running the client for Microsoft RDP protocol. This is where the USB peripheral device is physically attached. The remote desktop that will access the shared device is known as the USB over RDP Client. Any USB port of your local PC can be available for remote connection once you share it with the advanced USB over RDP Redirector. After you share a USB interface, you can connect the required peripheral to this port and establish a connection to the attached device from a remote computer. Generic USB redirection works at a low level and redirect USB request and response message between client machines and XenDesktop virtual desktop. It avoids the requirement for compatible device drivers on the client machine and the driver is expected to be supported on the virtual desktop only. The USB redirection feature is available only on some types of clients, such as Windows, Mac, and partner-supplied Linux clients. To find out whether this feature is supported on a particular type of client, see the feature support matrix included in the 'Using VMware Horizon Client ' document for the specific type of client device.
-->Applies to: Windows Server 2022, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2
We're often asked how the different Remote Desktop clients compare to each other. Do they all do the same thing? Here are the answers to those questions.
Redirection support
The following tables compare support for device and other redirections across the different clients. These tables cover the redirections that you can access once in a remote session.
If you remote into your personal desktop, there are additional redirections that you can configure in the Additional Settings for the session. If your remote desktop or apps are managed by your organization, your admin can enable or disable redirections through Group Policy settings or RDP properties.
